Michael Kenna: Forms of Japan Details

Review "Having spent decades photographing Japan, Michael Kenna presents the country's sea, land, trees, sky and 'spirit' in this handsome collection of elegant black-and-white photos. No neon signs, crammed trains or jostling crowds disfigure his minimalist landscapes of fenceposts in snow, raked gravel, lanterns in a forest, a single tree in a sea of white. His is an idealized, austere and meditative Japan that may exist only in his mind and camera, but every image is a tranquil benediction." ―StarTribune Read more

While it is hard to avoid singing the praises of the beautifully crafted Nazarelli Press books that many of these images have appeared in previously (Hokkaido being one of the most beautiful books I own), Prestel has done a wonderful job selecting many of the images that Kenna has made of the Japanese landscape over the years (many of which were not published in previous books). Interspersed among these many images are some wonderful haiku. All in all a very handsome volume, one worth owning both for those who already enjoy Kenna's work and those who are new to his work.
